Lake Como Vacation Homes

1/17
Our properties are situated in these characteristic lakeside towns, all on the western shores,
so you wake up to the sun rise and relax in the evening, after a long warm day, on your terrace,
in the cool evening air.

ARGEGNO is a small town on the western branch of Lake Como, with 693 inhabitants.
It is 18kms from the capital town Como, easy to reach by local bus from Como and also the navigation company ferries. They all stop in Argegno!

From Argegno you can reach every other town on the lake by ferry, fast or slow and enjoy the lake from the lake, a sit should be seen.
From Argegno, there is an interesting cable car ride, taking you to the small mountain top village of Pigra, with it’s wonderful views of the lake.at 850m above sea level.

The village centre with it’s safe pedestrian paths, coming from the hillside, has characteristic narrow cobbled lanes and archways, there are several  shops, the local panifico, which supplies  freshly baked bread and croisants 7 days a week, Mario’s fruit and vegetable store and a small mini market for basics On the lake front, there is a small market on Monday mornings, very good for fresh foods, but there are also a few clothe  stalls too. A very important spot is Zoe’s ice cream parlour, in my opinion, the best on the lake., a MUST TRY. There are two banks with international cash machines, post office, farmacy and many small bars,  snack bars, pizzerias and restaurants, all offering excellent quality food. A delightful harbour with marina, where the locals moor their boats, a  fishing tackle shop,  The village has it own pebble beach and this summer a new ‘lido’ area with swimming pool on the lake side.

At the centre of all this is
an attractive  fountain, added to the village two years ago, on summer evenings there is often live music to entertain guests.

It is also worth wondering just outside Argegno on the hill side there are other very nice restaurants, La Griglia, Ristorant,e Sant Anna and La Brea and just along the lake, southwards is an excellent lakeside restaurant with terrace, called Crotto dei Plattani, definately worth a visit.

CARATE URIO

1,300 inhabitants

The village of Carate Urio, is on the lakeside, on the western shore of Lake Como and roughly 8 kms north of the city of Como. It has 1,200.00 inhabitants ansi is still unspoiled by modernization, keeping its old world feeling with characteristic streets and stepped lanes crossed by low bridges which join the century old houses. In fact many famous people have decided to make this area their own private paradise, for example Gianni Versace, whose beautiful villa is just 3 kms. south of the Lario apartment and also George Clooney's, delightful lake side home is 1 km north in the village of Laglio.

There are a few very good restaurants along the lake side in Carate urio, closet o the ferry stop, the Dolce acqua has a wonderful terrace on the lake, so does the Hotel Fioroni, where the owner will serenade you with his fisarmonica! Thea small food store offers a delivery service, farmacy is very convenient and is closet o the  post office and bars.

The slow ferry stops here and you can take ferries to Como and northwards to Bellagio. There i salso the local bus, which passes through the village.

Carate Urio

LAGLIO 980 inhabitants
Pretty lake front village sitting next to Carate Urio,, full of light and perfume, between 1928 and 1948 the municipality was shared  with Brienno but now is made up exclusively of Laglio and its fractions, among which in particular Torrigia. This lies at the tip that pushes on the lake and is, with its 650 meters, the narrowest point between the shores of Lake Como and is also the point of maximum depth of 410 meters.

It is an excellent starting point for walks along the lake shore, and on the surrounding hills from which a panorama of rare beauty is admired. The slopes that rise above the inhabited area are rich with vineyards, olive groves , and laurel plants, from which at one time medicinal laurel oil was entracte.

The village offers two excellent restaurants, la locanda del cantierri and a small family run restaurant, serving ONLY lake fish. Both reccommended. There is a small store, open 7 days a week, all year, and an excellent busche shop, a public boat dock, so it is ideal for private boat tours on the lake.

Of course, we cannot mention Laglio with mentioning the famous actor who has made it his second home, George Clooney, he is often seen cycling along the lake road, eating in the local restaurants and his favourite barber shop is just a few minutes walk from his villa, Villa Oleandra.

The tradition of the market started in the 16th century when the locals gathered to sell their products and rang the Church bells to let people from other villages know. SALA COMACINA

This little village, which lies  at the foot of Monte Costone, is one of the most distinctive places on the lake. In the last century Sala Comacina was already considered an important holiday destination, as is demonstrated by the many villas which have stood along the coast since then. On the headland known as the "Puncia", which was formed by deposits from the Premonte stream, stands Villa Rachele.

The lake's only island, Isola Comacina, lies opposite the village and can be reached by boat private boat, from the small lake piazza, or by public boat. There one can visit the fourteenth century Church of San Giovanni and the remains of the little Church of Sant'Eufemia, which dates back to seventh century but it was rebuilt in the eleventh century.

Every year in June the festival of Saint John takes place to commemorate the destruction of the island by the Comaschi, in 1169, as a punishment for its alliance with Milan, during the ten-year war (1118-1127).

The village, which has 600 inhabitants, sits mostly on the lake side, so driving through Sala Comacina, its charm cannot be seen, but if you walk to thelake and along the walkway which has been created over the last few years, you will be able to admire wonderful  views and a hidden beauty, which you would not expert to find. There are a few shops here and on the lake front, a very nice restaurant, ‘La Tirlindana’ which has a french chef, so it offers a mix of Italian and French cuisine. Also along the lake front, there is a bigger restaurant/pizzeria, used a lot by the locals, but visitors are very welcome, this is the spot to pick, if you want to admire the  editing firework display on St. John’s day at the end of June.

The City of Como

COMO CITY CENTRE APARTMENT

Como sits at the southern end of the western branch of Lake Como in northern Italy. It's the most important town on the lake, with a long history, lively streets and a busy waterfront. Como has excellent transport connections, being just half an hour from Milan by train and only a few miles from Italy's border with Switzerland. Ferries and buses run up and down the lake's shores, and little seaplanes take off from the waters close to town. A funicular climbs up the hillside to offer panoramic views. Como isn't the most atmospheric or relaxing place to stay on the lake, but it is a practical overnight base and there's plenty to do. Even if you are simply passing through, it is worth taking a short time to see the town centre.
